There are countless millions of universes
and whatever glories they possess,
whatever consciousness they possess,
are all manifestations of a mere portion
of the effulgence of the holy name of Krishna.
This Holy Name is my spiritual practice;
it is the goal of my spiritual practice.

ceto darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava mahā dāvāgni nirvāpaṇaṁ
śreyaḥ kairava candrikā vitaraṇaṁ vidyā vadhū jīvanam
ānandāmbudhi vardhanaṁ prati padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ
sarvātma snapanaṁ paraṁ vijayate śrī kṛṣṇa saṅkīrtanam

It cleanses the mirror of the mind;
it extinguishes the blazing conflagration of material life;
it spreads the moon rays of auspiciousness;
it is the living understanding of spiritual learning.
It increases the ocean of divine ecstasy;
it gives at every moment a full taste
of the ambrosia of deathlessness,
with which it bathes the entire soul.
This glorification of the name of Krishna
is victorious over everything.

brahmāṇḍānāṁ koṭi-saṅkhyādhikānām
aiśvaryaṁ yac cetanā vā yad aṁśaḥ
āvirbhūtaṁ tan-mahaḥ kṛṣṇa-nāma
tan me sādhyaṁ sādhanaṁ jīvanaṁ ca

viṣṇor nāmaiva puṁsāḥ śamalam apaharat puṇyam utpādayac ca
brahmādi-sthāna-bhogād viratim atha guroḥ śrīpada-dvandva-bhaktim
tattva-jñānaṁ ca viṣṇor iha mṛti-janana-bhrānti-bījaṁ ca dagdhvā
saṁpūrṇānanda-bodhe mahati ca puruṣaṁ sthāpayitvā nivṛttam

Vishnu’s name alone takes away the sins of humankind:
it is the birthplace of all piety;
it takes away any taste one may have for worldly pleasures,
though they be in the abode of Brahma himself;
it bestows devotion to the feet of the spiritual master
and roasts the seed of error that produces
the cycle of births and deaths.
It only ceases its work
when it establishes the soul in its true glory
of full blissful consciousness.

nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś
caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ
pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto
'bhinnatvān nāma-nāminoḥ

Like Krishna himself, the name
is the spiritual gem
that fulfills all desires:
It is the embodiment of the flavors
of pure consciousness.
It is complete, pure and eternally liberated,
for the Name and the Named are never distinct.

madhura-madhuram etan maṅgalaṁ maṅgalānāṁ
sakala-nigama-vallī-sat-phalaṁ cit-svarūpam
sakṛd api parigītaṁ śraddhayā helayā vā
bhṛgu-vara nara-mātraṁ tārayet kṛṣṇa-nāma

The sweetest of the sweetest,
the most beneficial of the beneficial,
the most holy fruit of the orchard of the Vedas,
completely spiritual in nature –
that is Krishna’s name.
O best of the Bhrigus!
Sung even once,
whether faithfully or carelessly,
it brings salvation to every human being:
that is Krishna’s name.

svargārthīyā vyavasitir asau dīnayaty eva lokān
mokṣāpekṣā janayati janaṁ kevalaṁ kleśabhājam
yogābhyāsaḥ parama-virasas tādṛśaiḥ kiṁ prayāsaiḥ
sarvaṁ tyaktvā mama tu rasanā kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti rautu

All efforts made to reach the heavenly abodes
lead the world to impoverishment of the soul.
The search for liberation
creates nothing but misery for everyone.
The practice of yoga
leads to a loss of transcendental taste.
What is the need of such practices?
O my tongue! Give them all up
and simply call out, “Krishna! Krishna!!”

sadā sarvatrāste nanu vimalam ādyaṁ tava padaṁ
tathāpy ekaṁ stokaṁ na hi bhava-taroḥ patram abhinat
kṣaṇaṁ jihvāgra-sthaṁ tava tu bhagavan-nāma nikhilaṁ
sa-mūlaṁ saṁsāraṁ kaṣati katarat sevyam anayoḥ

Your effulgence, pure and original,
is surely eternal and omnipresent,
yet it does not cause even a leaf
of the tree of samsara to fall.
Whereas Your name, appearing for just a moment
on the tip of the tongue
cuts through the trunk
of that tree and uproots it.
So tell me, my Lord,
which of these two should I serve?

ākṛṣṭiḥ kṛta-cetasāṁ sumanasām uccāṁanaṁ cāṁhasām
ācaṇḍālam amūka-loka-sulabho vaśyaś ca mukti-śriyaḥ
no dīkṣāṁ na ca sat-kriyāṁ na ca puraścaryāṁ manāg īkṣate
mantro 'yaṁ rasanā-spṛg eva phalati śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmātmakaḥ

The mantra made up of Krishna’s names
bears fruit simply by coming into contact with the tongue:
it requires no initiation, no pious preliminaries,
and no complex penances like purascharan.
It attracts the minds of fortunate souls,
destroys sins, however great,
and is within the easy reach
of all those who are not dumb,
even including the dog eaters!
It brings even the glories of liberation into subjection.

(Padyāvalī 29, Bhagavan-nāma-kaumudī 133; CC Madhya 15.110)

viceyāni vicāryāṇi vicintyāni punaḥ punaḥ
kṛpaṇasya dhanānīva tvan-nāmāni bhavantu naḥ

May we collect Your names;
may we contemplate their glories;
may we meditate on them, again and again,
the way that a miser
collects, studies and meditates
on his accumulated possessions.

nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija sarva śaktis
tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ
etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi
durdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ

O Lord!
in Your numerous holy names,
You have invested all Your personal potencies,
yet made no rules about when one can remember them.
So great is Your mercy, my Lord!
And yet, so great my misfortune
that I have developed no attraction for them.

tṛṇād api sunīcena taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

The names and glories of the Lord are to be sung
by one who is lower than even the grass,
as tolerant as the tree, who has no desire for personal honor,
but is ready to give all honor to others.

(Padyāvalī 32, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, CC 3.20.21)

śrī-rāmeti janārdaneti jagatāṁ nātheti nārāyaṇety
ānandeti dayā-pareti kamalākānteti kṛṣṇeti ca
śrīman-nāma-mahāmṛtābdhi-laharī-kallola-magnaṁ muhur
muhyantaṁ galad-aśru-netram avaśaṁ māṁ nātha nityaṁ kuru

O Lord, I beg you to make me
cry helplessly, tears flowing from my eyes,
fainting constantly, immersed in the oceanic waves
of Your nectarean holy name:
Sri Rama! Janardana! Lord of the Universes!
Narayana! Joy! Compassionate one! Lover of Lakshmi! Krishna!

(Padyāvalī 33, Lakshmidhara, Bhagavan-nāma-kaumudī)

śrīkānta kṛṣṇa karuṇā-maya kañjanābha
kaivalya-vallabha mukunda murāntaketi
nāmāvalīṁ vimala-mauktika-hāra-lakṣmī-
lāvaṇya-vañcana-karīṁ karavāṇi kaṇṭhe

Krishna! Husband of the Goddess of Fortune!
Most compassionate one! Lotus-navelled one!
Beloved of the liberated! Giver of liberation! Destroyer of Mura!
May I always decorate my throat with these names
that make a mockery of the beauty
of the purest pearl necklaces.

(Padyāvalī 34, Lakshmidhara)

kṛṣṇa rāma mukunda vāmana vāsudeva jagadguro
matsya kacchapa nārasiṁha varāha rāghava pāhi mām
deva-dānava-nāradādi-munīndra-vandya dayā-nidhe
devakīsuta dehi me tava pāda-bhaktim acañcalām

O Krishna, O Rama, O Mukunda
O Vamana, Vasudeva, Jagat Guru!
O Fish, O Tortoise, O Man-lion!
O boar incarnation! O Raghava, save me!
O compassionate one, worshiped by the gods,
demons and the chief of sages such as Narada.
O son of Devaki, grant me
unswerving devotion at Your feet.

(Padyāvalī 35)
he gopālaka he kṛpā-jala-nidhe he sindhu-kanyā-pate
he kaṁsāntaka he gajendra-karuṇā-pārīṇa he mādhava
he rāmānuja he jagat-traya-guro he puṇḍarīkākṣa māṁ
he gopījana-nātha pālaya paraṁ jānāmi na tvāṁ vinā

O cowherd boy! O ocean of compassion!
O husband of the daughter of the ocean, Lakshmi!
O killer of Kamsa! O merciful deliverer of the king of elephants!
O Madhava! Balarama’s younger brother! Guru of the three worlds!
O lotus-eyed lord! Master of the gopis!
Take care of me, for I know nothing other than you.

(Padyāvalī 36, Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta 2.108)

he deva he dayita he bhuvanaika-bandho
he kṛṣṇa he capala he karuṇaika-sindho
he nātha he ramaṇa he nayanābhirāma
hā hā kadā nu bhavitāsi padaṁ dṛśor me

O My Lord! O dearest one!
O only friend of the universe!
O Krishna, O restless one, O ocean of mercy!
O My Lord, O My enjoyer, O beloved to My eyes!
Alas, when will You again be visible to Me?

(Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛtam, 40; CC Madhya 2.65)

śrī-nārāyaṇa puṇḍarīka-nayana śrī-rāma sītā-pate
govindācyuta nanda-nandana mukundānanda dāmodara
viṣṇo rāghava vāsudeva nṛ-hare devendra-cūḍāmaṇe
saṁsārārṇava-karṇa-dhāraka hare śrī-kṛṣṇa tubhyaṁ namaḥ

Sri Narayana! Lotus-eyed Lord!
Sri Rama, husband of the goddess Sita!
Govinda, infallible one, son of Nanda Maharaja!
O Mukunda, O bliss, O Damodara!
O Vishnu, O Raghava, O Vasudeva! O man-lion!
O crown of the king of gods!
O captain of the ship that crosses the ocean of life!
O Hari, O Krishna! Obeisances to thee!

bhāṇḍīreśa śikhaṇḍa-maṇḍana vara śrī-khaṇḍa-liptāṅga he
vṛndārarṇya-purandara sphurad-amandendīvara-śyāmala
kālindī-priya nanda-nandana parānandāravindekṣaṇa
śrī-govinda mukunda sundara-tano māṁ dīnam ānandaya

O king of the Bhandira tree! O beloved!
You decorate your hair with a peacock feather!
You smear camphor ointment on your limbs!
You are the chief citizen of Vrindavan!
You are blue-black like the blooming blue lotus!
You love your sports on the banks of the Yamuna!
O son of Nanda! Supreme joy! Lotus-eyed lord!
Govinda, Mukunda, O handsome one!
I am so miserable, please bring me joy.

Rupa Goswami’s Śrī-Kṛṣṇa-nāmāṣṭakam

nikhila-śruti-mauli-ratna-mālā-
dyuti-nīrājita-pāda-paṅkajānta
ayi mukta-kulair upāsyamānaṁ
paritas tvāṁ hari-nāma saṁśrayāmi

O Holy Name ! You who are worshiped by the community of liberated souls! The nails of Your lotus feet are worshiped by the glowing radiance emanating from the necklace of jewels known as the Upaniṣads, which themselves are the crown-jewel of all the Śrutis. I take complete shelter of You.

jaya nāma-dheya muni-vṛnda-geya he
jana-rañjanāya paramākṣarākṛte
tvam anādarād api manāg udīritaṁ
nikhilogra-tāpa-paṭalīṁ vilumpasi

Victory to You, O Holy Name! Glories to You, who are to be sung by the great sages! You have kindly accepted this form as the supreme syllables in order to bring joy to the people of this world. Yet, even if You are pronounced in only a negligent manner, You destroy the chanter’s every last suffering, no matter how severe.

yad-ābhāso’py udyan kavalita-bhava-dhvānta-vibhavo
dṛśaṁ tattvāndhānām api diśati bhakti-praṇayinīm
janas tasyodāttaṁ jagati bhagavan-nāma-taraṇe
kṛtī te nirvaktuṁ ka iha mahimānaṁ prabhavati

O sun of the Lord’s names! What learned scholar in this world is competent to describe Your unsurpassed glories? Even ābhāsa, the dim light of Your early dawn, swallows up the darkness of ignorance that blinds the conditioned souls and enables them to envision devotion to the Lord.

yad brahma-sākṣāt-kṛti-niṣṭhayāpi
vināśam āyāti vinā na bhogaiḥ
apaiti nāma sphuraṇena tat te
prārabdha-karmeti virauti vedaḥ

O Nāma! The Vedas loudly declare that even without a devotee undergoing any suffering, his prārabdha-karma, which cannot be eliminated even by resolute meditation on the impersonal Brahman, is at once mitigated by Your appearance on the tongue.

aghadamana-yaśodānandanau nandasūno
kamalanayana-gopīcandra-vṛndāvanendrāḥ
praṇatakaruṇa-kṛṣṇāv ity aneka-svarūpe
tvayi mama ratir uccair vardhatāṁ nāma-dheya

O Holy Name! You have appeared in so many different forms, whether as Aghadamana, Yashodanandan, Nandasunu, Kamala Nayana, Gopi Chandra, Vrindavanendra, Pranata Karuna, or Krishna! May my love for You in all these forms go on growing forever!

vācyo vācakam ity udeti bhavato nāma svarūpa-dvayaṁ
pūrvasmāt param eva hanta karuṇā tatrāpi jānīmahe
yas tasmin vihitāparādha-nivahaḥ prāṇī samantād bhaved
āsyenedam upāsya so’pi hi sadānandāmbudhau majjati

O Holy Name! You have manifestated in two forms – as the Designated and the Designator. I think the latter is certainly more merciful than the former. For even though though a person commits offenses to the Holy Name, if he simply goes on constantly worshiping It with his tongue, he soon merges into the eternal ocean of transcendental bliss.

sūditāśrita-janārti-rāśaye
ramya-cid-ghana-sukha-svarūpiṇe
nāma gokula-mahotsavāya te
kṛṣṇa-pūrṇa-vapuṣe namo namaḥ

I bow down repeatedly to You, O Holy Name, whose rays dissipate all the sufferings of those who have taken shelter of You, who are the essence of delightful spiritual energy and joy, who are the eternal festival of the cowherd community. You are Krishna’s entire body.

nārada-vīṇojjīvana-
sudhormi-niryāsa-mādhurī-pūra
tvaṁ kṛṣṇa-nāma kāmaṁ
sphura me rasane rasena sadā

O name of Krishna! You infuse life into Narada Muni’s vina, and the waves of sweetness that flow from You embody the essence of nectar. Therefore I pray that You always manifest on my tongue with transcendental rasa.
