Bhakti Sandarbha 283 : Pāda-sevā (Concluded) and Arcanam

This section is split between a discussion of additional devotional activities that are included in  pāda-sevanam , namely living in the Dham (281.1), worshiping Tulasi Devi (281,2) before turning to arcana, which continues over the next few sections, including an important discussion of  necessity for  dīkṣā   (281,4). This is where the idea of taking initiation in order to establish a "particular  or specific relationship." Bhakti Sandarbha 280-282 : Service to Bhagavān (Pāda-sevanam)

This is a discussion of the fourth kind of the nava-vidha bhakti. Anuccheda 280 Service to Bhagavān ( Pāda-sevanam ) अथ रुचिः शक्तिश्च चेत् तदपरित्यागेन पादसेवा च कर्तव्या। सेवा स्मरणसिद्ध्यर्थं च सा कैश्चित् क्रियते। If one has the inclination and capability, he or she should also render service to Bhagavān’s feet, without giving up the practices of singing about and remembering Bhagavān. Some people render service to Bhagavān in order to perfect the practice of remembrance. तथा च विष्णुरहस्ये परमेश्वरवाक्यम्— न मे ध्यानरताः सम्यग् योगिनः परितुष्टये। तथा भवन्ति देवर्षे क्रियायोगरता यथा। क्रियाक्रमेण योगोऽपि ध्यानिनः सम्प्रवर्तते॥ इति। Parameśvara makes a statement to this effect in the Viṣṇu-rahasya : O Devarṣi, the yogīs engaged in meditation are not able to satisfy Me as fully as those engaged in kriyā-yoga .
