Another side of Bhaktivinoda 22 : A Svarasiki Adventure (Part I)

Image
In this chapter of Gadadhar Pran's presentation of his own unique bhajan path as it was inspired by his relation with Bhaktivinoda Thakur and the Chaitanya Vaishnava tradition to which he belonged. This follows on the three chapters describing Vishnupriya's tattva and pastimes with Mahaprabhu. Gadadhar participates in his prana Gora's pastimes in various different svarupas and prakoshthas. His approach may seem different to many people, but as he has argued in earlier chapters of this essay, these are moods that have deep roots in the sampradaya. Srimati Vishnupriya's glories (1) Srimati Vishnupriya's glories (2) Srimati Vishnupriya's glories (3) N.B. When saying a svārasikī adventure, we mean a līlā meditation that follows the path of our yearning.  See Chapter 3 of this series . As we have been discussing Vishnupriya and Gauranga's madhura pastimes in the last three chapters, a desire is awakening to personally serve Priyaji. And an i...

BVT 10 :: Lalita Prasad Thakur

Image
As has already been stated, Bhaktivinoda Thakur's Jīvanī was addressed to Lalita Prasad Thakur. Naturally Bhaktivinoda gave some priority to matters related to the person to whom he wrote the book. He says that there were special circumstances surrounding this child’s birth: a sadhu whom he recognized as Narada Muni, came and glorified the baby and said he would become a great mahā-puruṣa . "You were born in Ranaghat on the 15th of Ashwin 1880. I saw auspicious signs on your body that indicated that you would grow up to be particularly religious. ... You were born on the day of Sri Ekadasi. In a dream I saw an ugly monkey which came to me and said, 'This child is very wicked and will not live.' Immediately afterward, Sri Narada appeared in the dream and said, 'That monkey was Kali. Do not heed his words. This boy is born on Harivasara [ekadasi]. He will be initiated into the pure Vaishnava religion and will preach that dharma. No one will be able to kill him...

Diksha Parampara

Image
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati started a NEW sampradaya. There are two Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradayas, with two different diksha paramparas. The Gaudiya Math diksha parampara STARTS with Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. Saraswati Thakur rejects the previous diksha parampara which was followed by Bhaktivinoda Thakur. Am I right or wrong? So if you choose to accept Siddhanta Saraswati's line, then fine. But you have to recognize that they are two different paths, similar in many respects, supposedly following the same shiksha tradition. But in the traditional paramparas, the shiksha includes a particular culture of raganuga bhakti that is NOT accepted by the Gaudiya Math. They have their reasons, their interpretations of shastra that are their own. They are not in agreement. But in view of the similar objective and similar antecedents there is a possibility of cooperation, but it is not very likely as long as each considers the other illegitimate. In fact, since everyone is chanting the Hol...

Siddha-pranali:You can't just get it from books

pustaka-pratyayādhītaṁ nādhītaṁ guru-sannidhau | sabhā-madhye na śobhante jāra-garbhā iva striyaḥ || Learning taken from books according to one's own impressions, but not learned with a guru, is unfit for the public space, like a woman who is pregnant with an illegitimate child. (Chanakya) I think that actually having the association of rāgānugā sādhakas , my own diksha guru, Lalita Prasad Thakur, Ananta Das Babaji in Radha Kund and many others over the years, has made a bit of difference in the way that I approach the issue of rāgānugā-bhakti and mañjarī-bhāva . Like my guru wrote on the back of the siddha-praṇāli sheet he handed out to his disciples: "You can't just get it from books." This offends people who are convinced that everything can be found in books, because why were the books written if not to inform of them? Of course, that Bhaktivinoda Thakur's books talk about taking siddha-praṇāli from or through the medium of a guru somehow seems irr...
