Bhakti Sandarbha 225 : Three Divisions of Saṅga-siddhā Bhakti

Image
Gundicha temple in Jagannath Puri. After completing the subject of āropa-siddhā bhakti (217-224), Sri Jiva now turns to saṅga-siddhā , which will be covered up until Anu 230. Saṅga-siddhā is primarily known as miśrā bhakti . Karma-miśrā bhakti is subdivided into sa-kāmā , with a desire for material enjoyment; kaivalya-kāmā, with a desire for liberation; and bhakti-mātra-kāmā , with a desire for devotion alone Reminder: This is not the final text of the book. The published edition will be upgraded from this. Anuccheda 225 Three Divisions of Saṅga-siddhā Bhakti तदेवमारोपसिद्धा दर्शिता। We have thus described āropa-siddhā bhakti , or action indirectly attributed with the quality of devotion. We will now discuss mixed devotion as an example of saṅga-siddhā bhakti , action associated with devotion. ३.

Bhakti Sandarbha 224 : Three Motives Behind the Offering of Karma

Image
This is the final anuccheda dealing with āropa-siddhā bhakti and the process of offering karmas to Bhagavān. Sri Jiva is leading up to pure bhakti, and offering up activities for Krishna's pleasure is the most fruitful way of doing so. Remember, these are not the final version of the Bhakti Sandarbha, which will go through several more Anuccheda 224 Three Motives Behind the Offering of Karma १.३.१७-१८)   — Karma can be offered in two ways: in order to give pleasure to Bhagavān, or simply renouncing [the results] for Bhagavān. These two methods are described successively in the following two verses from the  Kūrma  Purāṇa : "May Bhagavān, who is the Supreme Ruler, b...

Bhakti Sandarbha 222-223: The Result Of Karma is Under the Control of Bhagavān

Image
This section is a bit difficult as it deals with the problem of  apūrva, a concept of the Purva Mimamsa. Jiva quotes Sridhar Swami at length. Bharata performed a sacrifice but saw that the  apūrva , i.e., the subtle power of a pious act that connects it to the future result, was actually situated in Bhagavan. Through this awareness he was inexorably led to  svarūpa-siddhā bhakti. Again disclaimer: This is not the final version of this translation. Please bear that in mind and buy the printed edition when it comes out. Our aim is to make this the most authoritative translation of the Sandarbhas. Anuccheda 222 The Result Of karma is Under the Control of Bhagavān ५.७.६)— Moreover, the result of karma is in reality under Bhagavān’s control. But a person of meager intelligence, who c...

Bhakti Sandarbha 218-221 : Karma Offered To Bhagavān Destroys Karma

Image
The section on  āropa-siddhā bhakti continues, with a description of karma that is treated therapeutically and therefore becomes a cure for the very bondage it has caused. DISCLAIMER: These posts are not the final version of the Jiva Institute edition of  Bhakti Sandarbha , which is still going to go through more editing before being published. Anuccheda 218 Offering of Karma Never Goes in Vain Now we can examine the praise attributed to the offering of karma performed in accordance with Vedic injunctions, such as this statement of the celestials in their prayers to Bhagavān Ajita: The activities of those who are attached to their bodies and who are thus tormented by desire for sense objects, yield little or no result, in spite of tremendous exertion. But such is not the case with those offered to You. (SB 8.5.47) विषयार्तानां कर्माणि क...

Bhakti Sandarbha 217: Three Divisions of Bhakti (Āropa siddhā bhakti)

Image
This is another extremely important anuccheda of Bhakti Sandarbha where the three categories  ā ropa-siddhā ,  saṅga-siddhā  and  svarūpa-siddhā bhakti  are explained.  I visited this subject in 2007 . Anuccheda 217 Three Divisions of Bhakti 217.1 Āropa-siddhā , saṅga-siddhā and svarūpa-siddhā bhakti This bhakti is of three types: āropa-siddhā [actions superimposed with the quality of direct devotion]; saṅga-siddhā , [actions accompanied by devotion]; and svarūpa-siddhā , [actions that are directly devotion themselves]. Out of these, āropa-siddhā bhakti consists of karma and similar practices, which although devoid of bhakti by themselves, attain the quality of bhakti by processes like being offered to Bhagavān.
